A Gluten Allergy Can Be Frustrating
You know you have
some type of allergy problem and you eventually learn that you have a
gluten allergy. Now, what in the world is gluten? You begin to
research what it is so that you can learn how to avoid this food item
in your diet.
Many people first realize they have a medical problem because of the
symptoms associated with a gluten allergy. The symptoms of a
gluten allergy will vary from person to person. It is possible to
experience a rash or hives, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and even
asthma attacks. For people who have a severe gluten allergy, the
consequences of eating gluten in any form can be life threatening.
Learning to live with a gluten allergy can be overwhelming for many
people. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, and rye products.
It is a protein that helps these grains bind when being mixed in a
specific food product. The real challenge for a person with a
gluten allergy is that many foods are made using wheat, barley and rye
products.
Testing for food allergies is difficult because bloods tests can be
inconclusive and skin tests are not very reliable. If you
have an idea that you have a gluten allergy, the simple solution is to
stop eating the item and all of its derivatives.
The severity of the reaction to a gluten allergy will vary from person
to person. For some people, just reducing the amount of gluten in
their diet with help alleviate the negative reactions. Other
people may need to completely eliminate all gluten from their diets.
If we use the example of gluten as the item that you are allergic to,
you would immediately think, okay, no wheat, barley or rye. A
food allergy is not that simple. You cannot have bread, rolls,
bagels, crackers, or cookies, and the list goes on. Then,
depending upon how severe your gluten allergy is, you may also have to
watch for gluten derivatives in non-food items such as soaps and
gels—anything that comes into contact with your body. Then,
there is alcohol to think about. Did you know that beer is made
from barley? Or that other alcohol is made from different
grains. This is worth checking to ensure that you don’t
have an allergic reaction when having a drink.
Think you are out of the woods with your gluten allergy just because it
has been identified? Well, you probably are not. If a food
item contains gluten as part of the ingredients or packaging of a
product, it may be exempt from the legal requirement to be listed on
the package. Therefore, the item is hidden from the
consumer.
You can live with your gluten allergy, thousands of people do! It
will, however, take diligence on your part to ensure that you control
the amount of gluten in your diet and that you begin to carefully read
ingredient listings on most products when shopping for food.
